The City of Fairfax, an autonomous municipality, is nestled within the broader political structure of Fairfax County. Fascinatingly, within the city itself, there exists an exclave that belongs to Fairfax County, housing the County Court annex which encompasses the Courthouse and both the Adult and Juvenile Detention Centers.

This city, in conjunction with the immediate surrounding zone marking its historical boundary, together acknowledged as “Fairfax” by the County, collectively form the county seat of Fairfax County. Adding to the city’s distinctive character is its geographical positioning within the larger context of the Washington metropolitan area and Northern Virginia

Catch a show at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts

Established by Catherine Filene Shouse alongside her donation of Wolf Trap Farm to the National Park Service, the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization. The operation of the park constitutes a public/private partnership between the National Park Service, responsible for the management of the park grounds, and the Foundation, which organizes the performances and educational initiatives.

From May to September, performances are hosted in the Filene Center, while The Barns at Wolf Trap, situated just outside the park, holds events all year. The Foundation also runs the Wolf Trap Opera Company, nurturing young opera singers. Additionally, it oversees several educational programs outside the park, including the nationally acclaimed Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts, a top-tier college internship program, and the Children’s Theatre-in-the-Woods, a performance venue within the park.

While on the parkway, visit Great Falls Park

Spanning 800 acres, the park is nestled on the banks of the Potomac River in northern Fairfax County. Although physically separate, it remains an essential component of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Landmark alert: George Washington’s Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon stands as a prominent American symbol and the historical plantation once owned by George Washington, a Founding Father, the leader of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, and the inaugural president of the United States. His wife, Martha, also resided on the estate. The property is beautifully located alongside the Potomac River within the borders of Fairfax County, Virginia.
